Çorovodë takes its name from the Albanian for 'black water' — an apt description of the dark, deep current of the Osum River that carved the dramatic canyon surrounding the city. The administrative centre of the Skrapar district in Berat County, Çorovodë sits at the confluence of mountain ridges in a landscape of extreme vertical drama, with the Osum Canyon forming one of the most spectacular gorges in the Balkans just a short distance from the town centre. The Osum Canyon stretches for roughly 26 kilometres through limestone walls that rise up to 150 metres in near-vertical faces, narrowing in places to just a few metres wide. The river runs turquoise and cold in spring, when white-water rafting trips navigate the most dramatic sections, and settles into calmer, swimmable pools in summer. The canyon walls are pierced by caves, the largest of which — the Cave of Spilja — is reportedly the biggest accessible cave in Albania, with formations and underground chambers that have barely been mapped. Above the gorge, the terrain opens into high mountain pastures where small villages maintain traditional highland life. The Skrapar district has a long human history — Illyrian fortifications and tumuli are scattered across the surrounding hills, and the city itself served as an important administrative centre through the Ottoman period. The Castle of Çorovodë, a small Ottoman-era fortress perched on a ridge above the town, offers panoramic views down into the canyon and across the mountain landscape that surrounds it on all sides. For visitors, the main draw is the combination of the canyon scenery and the rafting and trekking opportunities it creates. Several local operators run half-day and full-day rafting trips on the Osum in spring, and hiking paths follow the canyon rim and descend to the river at various points. Çorovodë is roughly two hours by road from Berat and makes a natural extension of a visit to the Osum Canyon — one of Albania's genuine natural wonders, still largely unknown to the international tourism circuit.
